Dr. Simon Runkel was a member of the University of Heidelberg’s Institute of Geography, acting as part of the scientific staff within the Department of Human Geography between 2015 and 2019. He studied geography, peace and conflict research, psychology and art history at the University of Marburg, the University of California in Los Angeles and the University of Bonn. Prior to joining the Institute of Geography in Heidelberg, he worked at the Institute of Geography of the University of Bonn, at the Institute for Media Research at the University of Siegen and was employed in a private training and consulting firm in Bonn for several years.

In 2015, he received his doctorate at the University of Bonn with a thesis on Crowd Management. A social-geographical study on the spatial organization of safety and security measurements in large-scaled events (in German).

In addition to teaching at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík (Erasmus Teaching Mobility) and the Charles University in Prague (DAAD), he was invited as a Visiting Scholar at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise by the Laboratoire Mobilités Reseaux Territoires Environnement in 2017.

Dr. Simon Runkel´s field of research focuses on political social geography. In particular, he concentrates his scientific work on social change and cohesion from a socio-geographical perspective, geographical risk and security research, the correlation of emotion, affect and space, as well as the theory and sociology of (scientific) knowledge concerning human geography.
