Projects

My research is in geospatial data fusion, at the interface of remote sensing, GIScience and citizen science. I rely on the use of deep learning models to estimate data quality and to solve traditional classification problems such as land use and land cover classification. By combining voluntarily collected data from mapathons or harvesting from prior data bases with remote sensing data, exclusive novel data products are created making the most of abundant human information available online and the effective use of deep learning.

I work closely with application experts across academia and industry to promote efficient and solution driven science. Previously within the H2020 LandSense project I work on quality estimation of citizen observatories and research on osmlanduse.org. I engage in research activities related to quality of data and its use for machine learning within the idealVGI project. Within the Heidelberg Center for the Environment I investigate the use of OpenStreetMap for greenhouse gas estimation for climate action science.

Together with my peers I lead classes on land cover classification and monitoring, OSMlanduse and machine learning. I’m currently providing lectures at Jena University as an substitute assistant Professor (akademischer Rat) and lead classes on remote sensing an GIS fundamentals on Bsc. level and specialized remote sensing classes and research seminars on Msc. level.
